Hepplewhite Demilune Folding Table by L.L.
Hammond. Style of New England, circa 1795. Made in the rare and
highly prized oval shape, this inlaid tour de force shows a rising-sun
pattern of feathered-cherry, tiger maple, and ebony lines on its top. When
catches on back are released, rear legs swing out to support the unfolded
top. Open, the table top is tiger maple with a flame cherry crossbanding and
ebony string inlay. The bottom of the gracefully curving apron is finished
with a cherry bead, carefully mitered around the legs. Classically Federal,
the delicate, tapering legs are inlaid with a figured cherry medallion at
the top, and cherry and ebony at the cuff. Behind the rear leg supports, two
hand-dovetailed secret drawers are hidden.
This table is one of Lorren L. Hammond's earliest furniture making and design accomplishments, and has captivated visitors to our showroom for four years.
