Boston or Salem, Circa 1800
Limited Edition, delivered for the Holidays, 2000 Because of the intense media coverage that this box has received, demand is high. If you want one, it is essential that you reserve it now. In 1999 the First Family asked Lorren to create an historic piece to celebrate our nation's heritage during the last Christmas of the millennium. The historically-accurate Federal style box he designed and made received tremendous accolades at the White House. |
Lorren was interviewed for numerous TV, radio, and newspaper stories, and the White House recommended him especially for a Home and Garden Television special, aired nationally, that featured Lorren in our showroom and creating the box in the shop. The box is also featured in two issues of Early American Homes magazine (July/August and the Christmas, 2000, issues).
Lorren feels that is essential to preserve the uniqueness of the box he created for the White House. Due to the overwhelming number of calls and requests, however, he has decided to offer an adaptation of this celebrated box in a Limited Edition.

The inlaid shell
The box's design incorporates the exquisite shapes, motifs and exotic woods that were popular during the Federal Period (1780-1830). This period was a time of light and grace, the spring of our nation, when the seeds of liberty, first planted long before the Revolution, finally blossomed. It is our hope and intent that this box captures the spirit of the Federal Period with the refined boldness and individuality of American thought and design, the subtly powerful shapes and proportions of this time, and pride in impeccable skill and craftsmanship.
Each box requires nearly 1300 individual pieces of wood. The carcass is solid mahogany, inlaid with plum-pudding mahogany, satinwood and ebony. The top veneer forms the classic Federal paterae (oval fan shape) motif, centering a hand-made inlaid shell of birds-eye maple, holly and other woods. The shell parts are shaded in hot sand, using an 18th century technique which adds visual depth. A hand-made ebony and holly "rope" inlay binds the edges of the box.

The "rope" inlay
The hinged lid is secured with a Period lock. Inside, a sectioned tray lifts to reveal a lower well; both are lined with velvet. The box is lightly hand-planed and finished with our golden shellacs and lacquer. The whole is then hand-rubbed to a burnished, glowing perfection. The box can be used as a jewelry, sewing or dressing box, or just displayed; it is quite striking. Each will be signed, dated and numbered on an attached label of authenticity. We will gladly personalize the label with appropriate names and sentiments. Some delightful little hand-planed shavings of the "rope" inlay, created during the making of the box, are included with each. The box is approx. 8 1/2" wide x 12" long x 3 3/4" tall.
